Lagos Light Series / Hot Wire Extensions

The Lagos Light series are the products of a month long residency supported by Pro Helvetia to bring Hot Wire Extensions’ founder Fabio Hendry to setup a small studio at the 16/16 maker-space located at 30 Ajasa Street.

Field research highlighted a supply of recycled polyethylene from a pure water bag making factory in Lagos and the opportunity to capture waste plastic at the last point in the supply chain - thereby creating a completely closed loop recycling system.

The process uses a mixture of sand and waste polyethylene (pure water bag sachets).

Using Hot Wire Extensions’ unique method of combining sand and this waste polyethylene, we were able to create 2 objects to commemorate this discovery- Lagos Light I and Lagos Light II. The Lagos Light series come in 3 unique colours - lime green, Danfo yellow and neutral. The pieces are finished off in clear coat epoxy and polyurethane.

In addition, the 16/16 maker-space at 30 Ajasa Street now has the capacity to build on the pioneering materials design work of Hot Wire Extensions in Lagos - bringing a new context to the design practice while ensuring continuous learning for the growing team at the workshop.

The long term goals of the project are to showcase the potential of using design and creativity to recycle waste pure water bags from the streets. The pieces also showcase a unique perspective on collaboration between Nigeria and the rest of the world.
